 日本オラクル 常務執行役員 システム事業統括本部長の三澤智光氏は、データベース最新版「Oracle Database 11g R2」について、「物理的なハードウェア構成に縛られず、サービスの要求に基づいて柔軟にインフラリソースを活用することができる」と強調する。クラウド時代のテーマは、より柔軟に大規模なリソースを再配置し運用コストを大幅に削減することにある。11g R2を核にした情報システムは、クラウド時代の理想型を提示している.

　日本オラクル 常務執行役員 システム事業統括本部長の三澤智光氏は、クラウド時代に求められるシステムインフラでは、データベースが極めて重要な役割を果たすと指摘する。クラウド時代には、莫大な量のデータを処理しなければならず、それをマルチサービス、マルチテナントでセキュアに高信頼性のもとで管理できなければならない。まさにこれは、データベースの領域であり、Oracleが最も得意とするところだ。

「データベースの技術革新の歴史は、ユーザー企業の既存資産（アプリケーションやデータ等）を生かしながら新しい技術を提供することにある」と三澤氏は指摘する。そして、ユーザーが求めるのはあくまでも堅牢かつより低コストなインフラストラクチャであり、必ずしも形態にはこだわらない。パブリッククラウドを利用するのか、またはプライベートクラウドを構築するのか、あるいはアウトソーシングやシェアドサービスを利用するのか、「利用形態が変わっても本質的には顧客が求めるものは同じだ」と三澤氏は話す。

　それぞれにメリット、デメリットがあり、企業の状況に応じ適宜選択すればいい。ただし、こうしたシステムを構築し、継続的かつ効率的にメリットを享受するには、データセンター全体のリソースを最適化することこそが重要になる。この実現のために、新たに登場したのがOracle Database 11g Release 2（以下11g R2）だという。

　11g R2のコンセプトは「Lowering IT Costs」。これは、サービスレベルを犠牲にしてコストカットをすることではない。グリッドに統合することでハードウェアコストを5分の1にする、ストレージコストの大幅な削減、無駄な冗長構成を排除してより高い可用性の実現、データウェアハウスのパフォーマンスの圧倒的な向上、データベース管理者の生産性を2倍以上に向上するといったものだ。これらの実現は、既存システムコストに対する節約ではなく「積極的なコスト削減である」と三澤氏は主張する。

グリッドの進化でリソースが最適化し、コストが削減される
　ここ最近IT業界においては、ERPパッケージなどを採用し、企業の業務プロセス効率化に注力してきた傾向がある。これ自体は今後も続けていくべき重要課題の1つではあるが、プロセスの効率化を促進すればするほどデータの重要性に改めて気付くことになると三澤氏は話す。バラバラなシステムにバラバラに存在するデータでは、リアルタイムに企業情報を把握できない。リアルタイムに状況が把握できなければ判断が遅れ、タイムリーな意志決定ができず、企業は競争に勝利できないのだ。

　リアルタイムな状況把握には、企業のデータの在り方を見直す必要がある。しかしながら、システムを統合し、データを一元管理しようとすると、莫大な手間とコストが掛かるのが普通だ。「データの在り方を見直すために大きなコストが掛かるようでは駄目。積極的なコスト削減こそが必要だ」と三澤氏。

　積極的なコスト削減を実現するもっとも有効な方法が、グリッド技術の採用だとのこと。OracleではOracle 9iでReal Application Clusters（RAC）を提供し、複数サーバで1つのデータベースサーバを稼働させ、可用性と拡張性を両立するシステム環境を提供した。

　そしてOracle 10gでは、これをさらに拡張し、複数データベースを複数サーバで稼働させる、マルチサービス、共用データベースの環境を提供したのだ。これにより、1つの大きなリソースのマシンにシステムを集めるサーバ仮想化による統合ではなく、複数サービスに対し複数サーバのリソースを効率的に割り当て利用できる仕組みを、RACで提供できるようになったのだ。

　とはいえ、この時点のRAC環境においても、グリッド化された物理サーバ群に特定サービスが割り当てられており、1つのデータベース・グリッドの中ではリソースを動的に配分できても、複数のデータベース・グリッド間でリソースの再配置は困難だった。

「10gの時代には、ハードウェアありきでした。まずRACが稼動するハードウェアを構成し、その中でサービスを割り当てていました」（三澤氏）

　物理サーバを特定しソフトウェアを稼働させるので、台数が増えると管理が複雑になる。これではデータベースサーバの統合によるコスト削減は図れても、クラウド時代に必要となるマルチサービス、マルチテナントの環境を大きな管理負担なく効率的に運用はできない。リソースの効率化が実現できず管理負担も増えるのならば、クラウド本来のメリットである規模の論理での低コスト化も実現できない。

　これを解決するのが、複数のデータベース・グリッドを束ね、共有インフラストラクチャをデータセンター規模で運用することを可能とするデータセンター・グリッドだ。11g R2では、Oracle Grid Infrastructureの提供でデータセンター・グリッドを実現する。ストレージリソースの仮想化、データベースを含むサーバリソースの仮想化により、インフラストラクチャ全体の仮想化を実現する。サービスと結びついていた物理サーバ群との関係を一切解消し、複数サービスに対し物理サーバのリソースを負荷に応じ動的に配置でき、真に効率的なリソース利用環境が出来上がるのだ。「Oracleではさらにこの上のアプリケーション実行環境についてもグリッド化を実現しているので、サービスをハードウェアから完全に解き放つことができる」と三澤氏は言う。

データセンター・グリッドはクラウド時代の理想型
クラウド時代のITインフラを考えた際には、11g R2で実現するデータセンター・グリッドは理想型だ。既存ITリソースを最大限に生かし、将来的なシステム要求の増大に対する拡張性も十分でシステム変更にも柔軟に対応できる。将来的にデータセンター・グリッドという理想型を目指すならば、現状でOracleのグリッド技術を積極的に活用しておくほうが、結果的にはコスト削減にもつながるはずだ。

　また、11g R2の新機能に、RAC One Nodeという機能がある。これは、複数の小規模データベースサーバをOracle Grid Infrastructureを用いて集約する機能だ。RAC One Nodeにより、小規模でそれほど高い可用性が要求されないシステムのインフラも統合することができる。サーバ仮想化技術を用いれば、確かに物理的に1台にシステムを集約できる。この環境では仮想サーバあるいはOSにトラブルが発生した際には、例えばVMwareのVMotionのような機能で別マシンの仮想化環境に移動できる。

　ところが、データベースに何らかのトラブルが発生した場合には、それをサーバ仮想化ソフトウェアでは検知できないため、容易には移動できず、実行中のトランザクションも保証されない。

　RAC One Nodeなら、障害やパッチ適用など何らかの理由でシングルノードのデータベースサーバをほかのマシンに移動したい際にも、停止時間なしで移動が可能だ。RACの拡張性は必要ないが、データベースの高い可用性は確保したいときに有効な機能であり、それをアクティブ・スタンバイ構成の独自の仕組みで確保するのではなく、Oracleのグリッド技術で実現できる。Oracle Grid Infrastructureの上にあるので、将来的なデータセンター・グリッドを目指す際にも親和性は高い。

　このほかにも11g R2には、さまざまな機能拡張がなされている。ストレージを仮想化する標準機能のASM（Automatic Storage Management）も、クラスターファイルシステム機能の提供ですべてのストレージ管理が対象になり、3rdベンダーのクラスターファイルシステムが不要となり、さらにストレージ管理効率を上げることができる。

　また、Online Application Upgrade機能を活用すれば、11g R2上で動くERPなどのアプリケーションの更新やパッチ適用の処理を、システム停止なしで実現できる。管理作業を効率化しシステム停止なくアップグレードや再構成をする機能は、マルチサービス、マルチテナントのシステム環境では極めて重要だ。これら機能も、クラウド時代にはなくてはならないものだ。

規模の大小にかかわらず新技術の活用で積極的なコスト削減を
ところで、企業の目的はクラウドコンピューティングを採用すること自体ではない。全世界在庫をリアルタイムに見えるようにしたい、リアルタイムでキャッシュフローを把握したいというビジネス要求に応える必要がある。ところが前述のように、ここ最近は、業務プロセスを効率化することに注力してきて、技術的な革新をないがしろにしてきた傾向がある。

　例えばバッチ処理に6時間かかる現実があり、それを仕方がないことと諦めてきた。速くするには、高価なハードウェアの導入となり大きなコストが掛かるためだ。しかしながら、11g R2の新機能を積極的に活用すれば、大きな性能改善が期待できる。例えば、In-Memory Parallel Queryという新機能がある。従来はハイエンドの高価なSMP UNIXマシンなどでなければ大規模なメモリ空間は活用できなかった。
しかしながら、最近では急激に安価になったインテルアーキテクチャサーバの広大なメモリ空間が利用できる。これを最大限に活用することで、安価に圧倒的なパフォーマンスを得る機能なのだ。これにより、検索時間が10分の1になることがある。そうなれば、6時間かかっていた処理は数十分で済む。これで1日1回しか判断のタイミングがなかった事象が、毎時判断できる。こうなれば、技術がビジネスを変えることになる。ここ数年はビジネスプロセスばかりに注目が集まっていたが「再びテクノロジーの進化がビジネスの革新をもたらす時代がやってきている」と三澤氏は指摘する。

Oracle9iユーザーは今こそ11g R2に移行すべき
このように11g R2は、クラウド時代に最適なデータベース製品だ。とはいえ、これは一部の大手企業やサービスプロバイダーのためだけのものではない。運用コストを大幅に下げるというメリットは、中小規模のデータベースシステムでも享受することができる。リソースを最大限に活用し性能が向上すれば、システム更新の間隔を長くしてコストを最適化できるし、ASMのようなストレージ仮想化や、管理を自動化する機能を活用すれば、技術者を十分に確保できない場合にも安全かつ手間なくシステム運用できる。

　Oracle9iなど過去のバージョンのデータベースを利用しているユーザー企業は非常に多い。「とりあえず問題なく動いているからこのままでいい」と考えるのではなく、積極的に新機能を活用すればどんな規模のシステムでも大きなメリットを享受できる可能性が高い。Oracle9iを使用しているユーザーは、今こそOracle Database 11g R2への移行が必要なのである。「データベースは単なるSQLのエンジンではない。ITインフラを最適化するためのエンジンととらえ、11g R2で積極的なコスト削減を目指すべき」だと、三澤氏は強く主張している。
